r. George Sheehan, Running Cardiologist during a Sports medicine clinic in Ridgefield, Conn., where he helped form the Wolfpit Running Club with Dr. Robert F. Weiss, who was the founder. This was followed by the inaugural 5 mile road race and a book signing of Dr. Sheehan's first book - Dr. Sheehan on Running.
r. Robert F. Weiss with Jim Fixx at Sports Medicine Clinic in Westport, Conn., prior to his first book signing - The Complete Book of Running (which was on the best seller book list for a number of years). Jim Fixx performed numerous clinics with Dr. Weiss and also field tested Dr. Weiss's first Patented foot Orthotic.
s a lifelong athlete, it's comforting to be treated by a fellow athlete like Dr.Robert Weiss, a onetime football player and longtime marathon runner. All the better when that treatment is done so skillfully, in this case, by an outstanding podiatrist who is also a great guy who over the years has become a good friend.
It was Dr.Weiss who first noticed that one of my legs is shorter than the other and prescribed orthodics for both shoes, which have worked out very well, even to the point of preventing callouses and bunions from forming on the feet of that shorter leg. It's also nice to know that Dr. Weiss, like me, is also a writer -- in his case it's an avocation, not a vocation as it is for me.
Over the years I've found his "Running Doctor" columns both informative and helpful since they not only relate to long-distance runners like himself but to jocks like me who take part in a number of sports and to people who, though not heavily into sports, work out occasionally and sometimes develop problems with their feet (Bob Weiss's specialty) or ankles -- his son and associate, Scott's domain
Though he's been around a long time, I would not be about to challenge Bob Weiss in a long-distance race. He's just in too good shape. Maybe in tennis or shooting free-throws on a basketball court or in a 50-yard swim race, but not against the "Running Doctor" in a long foot race. He's too much of an expert in that sport, as he is in treating the feet of aging athletes like me.
(Jack Cavanaugh, who lives in Wilton, Conn., covered sports for The New York Times for more than 30 years. He is now an author and a writing professor at Fairfield University in Connecticut and at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Cavanaugh also has written for Sports Illustrated, the Reader's Digest and a number of other national publications. He also is a former reporter for ABC News and CBS News. As an athlete, he now confines himself to tennis, golf, swimming and platform tennis.)
knew the name Bob Weiss as my newspaper (The Hour) covered his accomplishments as a marathon runner. The first time I met him (1974), he proceeded to get my attention by standing on my desk to demonstrate the need for orthotics, especially for walkers and runners. He made sense, so I asked him if he would like to write a weekly column on the subject. In 1974, the "Running Doctor" column was born. Also that year, at age 35, I took up tennis. It looked easy for a young "retired" jock. I soon found out that wasn't true. I was having problems with pain in my legs. I checked with Dr. Weiss and, after a complete examination, he changed my brand of sneaker and fit me with my first pair of orthotics.
For the next 20 years, I rose to the unofficial Top 25 media tennis players (minus media pros) in the country. During that time, my Patented-Orthotics along with Dr. Weiss' wisdom (not on tennis) guided me along to winning championships as US Open, National Associated Press Sports Editors, Family Circle, Tournament of Champions, and Dupont Cup. When it comes to the field of orthotics, there is nobody better than our "Running Doctor". If you don't believe me, just ask my wife, Patti, and two sons, Jeff & Rob, all of whom can speak about his expertise.

i Doc, I'm on my way to Delaware for the Senior Intersectionals Tennis Competition. I don't think I would be going if it weren't for our visit last week. Your treatment for my plantar fasciitis seems to have it under control and I expect to be able to play the Senior Grasscourt Nationals next month also. Thanks for making it possible!

am writing to show my gratefulness to Dr. Scott Weiss for the excellent care and attention you have given to me during the process of my convalesce, for the past 12 months, after sustaining a traumatic injury to my right lower extremity. I underwent five surgeries with Dr. Weiss following my right foot traumatic lawn-mower injury in September 2009. In that time, not only did I receive medical attention but also cordiality and interest; this not only allowed me to regain the use of my foot but also of my self-esteem and return to my daily life. I am immensely thankful. I would also like to express gratitude to all of the staff. I want to dedicate short but very significant words to Dr. Scott H. Weiss, who was the competent person in charge of the reconstruction of my foot during the different surgeries and interventions performed. To you I express with my humble perception all my respect and admiration. Not only for the great recognition and experience that is foreseen as a great surgeon but also for that human factor that characterized you from the beginning. Doctor Weiss, thank you for all your dedication; you don’t know how important this has been for me. You have permitted me to once again enjoy my life. May God continue giving you wisdom. I wish you continuous success in your career, and I hope you continue contributing help to those who need it. Once again Doctor Weiss, thank you.
ats off to Dr. Scott Weiss and his entire staff at the Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien for everything they did to help me recover from my diabetic foot infection . My humility, I feel greatful to God for and I thank him for providing me with a wonderful staff of doctors while I was hospitalized. Dr. Sarah Gamble(Internal Medicine), Dr. Taras KucherVascular Surgery) and Dr. Gavin McLeod(Infectious Disease) at the Stamford Hospital all helped me back to health. There multi-team effort was outstanding! Dr. Weiss performed 4 surgical procedures over a 6 month time period which proved to salvage my right lower extremity and give me a functional foot to walk on again.
Dr. Weiss has a bedside manner that is far more what is normally expected.
I appreciate his patience because I know that I wasn’t easy to deal with. We were able to develop a friendship which helped us bond and this helped me have a speedy recovery.
Scott Weiss, God has blessed you with something special and I hope that it continues to flow through each and every patient you touch.
Much More Success,
ast winter I was experiencing terrible foot pain. I’m very active, work on my feet all day long and enjoy vacationing as much as possible. My vacations usually involve a lot of activities and walking. Dr. Scott Weiss tried all different types of treatments to help alleviate my foot discomfort. Following the PRP Injection(Platelet Rich Plasma- Autogenous Venous Blood) my foot now feels 100% better. I’d have to say that I was a little nervous to try this new treatment but Dr. Weiss kept convincing me with confidence that it works very well. I’d have to say that I felt relief within the first week of the injection. Less than two weeks following the injection I went to China and climbed the GREAT WALL. My foot never gave in but the muscles in my legs were exhausted, hahaha ... It was a hard journey to go up, the steps are big and uneven and when I got down I never felt any pain in my foot! I must say, THANK YOU so much for all you have done. You surpassed my expectations with your dedication, attention and professionalism! My sincere gratitude and respect for you! Thank you once again Dr. Weiss!
r. Weiss was the first podiatrist I saw who focused on helping athletes
and made orthotics that I could comfortably run in. I ran varsity track and cross
country throughout all four years of high school. I have been seeing Dr. Weiss for
the last three years and his orthotics have made a huge difference in my running.
Before Dr. Weiss I had seen several podiatrists andhad countless different
orthotics, but Dr. Weiss was exactly who I was looking for—the Running Doctor.
I am currently in my second year as a cadet at the United States Military Academy
and am running with-out problems . Dr. Weiss is a phenomenal doctor and
engineer of orthotics for athletes—I recommend him to any and everyone. He is
also very kind and always a pleasure to see. Thank you for all you have done for
me and all the other athletes you have helped.
woke up in the middle of the night and unfortunately stubbed my foot on a piece of furniture. Worried about a fracture or developing an infection, I scheduled an appointment to see Dr. Scott Weiss at the Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien. Dr. Weiss took x-rays and was able to clean up my wound site. He was absolutely painless and I told all my friends and family about him. After performing daily dressing changes and 2 appointments later I've been discharged from his care and am performing all daily tasks once again. Many thanks to the Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien!
ow ! I can't believe how great my feet feel after coming to see the folks at the Foot & Ankle Institute of Darien. I didn't think I'd ever run again; but after a consultation with Dr. Scott Weiss and my brand new orthotics- I am ready to hit the road again ! I am eternally grateful ....
y name is Katie and I am 10 years old. When I was away at camp this summer a large, heavy bench fell on my big toe. The bench broke my toe and cut –off the top of the toe. I was treated by the camp doctor and she sewed my toe up – (with my loosened toe nail). That was not right and I knew something was wrong. I then went to see Dr. Scott Weiss at the Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien. He said he needed to do it over and remove the toe nail. I was so scared – I screamed!
Dr. Weiss was so nice to me and very gentle. He and his father were quick and patient with me. I still screamed but they were so nice. I had a big needle and they stitched my toe. That day they gave me lollipops and a ring.
For 7 weeks, my Mom had to take me to see Dr. Weiss – sometimes twice a week. He was always so happy to see how I was getting better. He gave me all different color bandages. I know I got better faster because he, his father and his nurses were so good and great to be around. Now I can do all of my sports again.
Thank you Dr. Weiss!
t should be known that Dr. Robert Weiss has helped me immensely throughout my track years. I did not start until I was 55 years old and didn’t know anything about pronation and how I was hurting myself. He has kept me running pain-free with treatments at the Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien and a "special" pair of custom made orthotics. He really knows his stuff and keeps up to date on all the new procedures out there. At 73 years old, he still has me running in competition for the Masters and Senior Olympics. I have recommended some of my friends to him without hesitation. Thanks again to Dr. Weiss and the FAI of Darien.
y ability to walk had become compromised due to a variety of Neurological factors. I was then referred into see Dr. Scott Weiss. Dr. Weiss performed a thorough exam and diagnosed me with a "Drop Foot Deformity." He was able to fit me with custom made orthotics and prescribe a special brace called an AFO that is able to help me gain back ameasure of stability. I had never been to a foot and ankle specialist before, but was very pleased with the help that I received from Dr. Weiss. I would urge others with foot/ankle problems not to wait or neglect visiting the Foot & Ankle Institute of Darien. You’ll be glad you did.

have been a patient of Dr. Robert Weiss for over 30 years. As a track athlete at Southern CT State University, a fellow runner referred me to Dr. Weiss to help alleviate my foot problems. His care and the proper fitting with his patented orthotics have allowed me to achieve a high level of success as a collegiate track and field athlete to a present day masters athlete. During my college competition, I obtained All New England status in the indoor 60m hurdles, outdoor 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and was the 1980 Pentathlon champion. I also finished in the top three at the Eastern Regional championships in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles and competed at the national championships in 1981 and 1982 in the 100m hurdles and was a member of the sprint medley relay. Post college I have achieved All American status in the 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump and 5 K road race. My professional career spans over 20 years of teaching experience at the high school, middle school and elementary level in a combination of Biology, Health Education and Physical Education and coaching cross country and track and field at the college, high school and middle school level. Currently I’m the assistant girls cross country coach at Cheshire High School and the assistant boy’s track and field coach at the Middle school. My three children are also patients of Dr. Robert Weiss and are each fitted with his patented orthotics. Through his expertise and compassionate care, Dr. Weiss has enabled me to maintain a high level of fitness and to help my children pursue their athletic goals in volleyball, basketball and baseball. Dr. Weiss is a very talented physician and I am very grateful for his hard work and dedication to the field of Podiatric Medicine/Surgery.

t 38, I suffered from tremendous pain in both feet due to bone spurs and mild/medium bunions in both feet.I had tried years of conservative treatments and Dr. Scott Weiss finally said, "You know that you should start considering surgical correction of your bunion deformities.” So, I agreed - thinking "I'm not going to get any younger." And I'm a big baby! Don't tell me any of the details until it is over But if you want the details, Dr. Weiss is happy to supply them. We did the right foot in May 2010 and I was walking on it a week later. And in November 2010 we did the left foot. I was walking on it 2 days after surgery! The pain is now gone and I’m now wearing my high heels again!

any thanks to Dr. Scott Weiss for all his hard-work, intelligence and dedication in helping my father with his diabetic foot infection. My family and I are so appreciative that Dr. Weiss was consulted on my father’s case. Dr. Weiss spent numerous hours with my father in the in-patient(hospital) and office setting in providing top-notch work and a most importantly a healthy and speedy recovery. Let it be known that Dr. Weiss has an incredible passion and knowledge for working with patients who unfortunately suffer from diabetes. I would highly recommend him to all of those patients who have diabetes and need a foot specialist. Thanks again to Dr. Weiss and his staff for everything they did to help my father through his recovery and allow him to walk again.
y husband and I wanted to write this note to tell you how grateful we are that the Stamford Hospital Hospital finally sent Dr. Scott Weiss to see my sister, in consultation. Because of your knowledge and attention to what was wrong with her, you saved her leg. My sister has a lot of confidence in you. You were not only the best doctor for her but for my husband and myself. We could rely on you to be there for us if throughout the surgeries and her post-operative care. You are what a doctor should be. Your patients are very fortunate. You deserve all the thanks and praise I can give you for all your kindness. You have a wonderful bedside manner and a terrific smile. God Bless you.

oel S. "Jace" Jacobson is a USATF Masters track & field athlete. He has been active for about 8 years and his passion is the triple jump. Jace credits track and field with saving his life as his participation has resulted in improving his overall health. He is happy to have found a specialist such as Dr. Robert Weiss, who can empathize with him and take good care of his feet.
cannot imagine a more caring, concerned doctor than Dr. Weiss. He treats my foot problems – but he also is concerned about me as a total human being.
His exams go beyond thorough. His prescriptions take care of whatever ails me. But far beyond that, he makes me feel better as a person. If Marcus Welby needed a partner, Dr. Weiss would be first on his list.
I have recommended Dr. Weiss to athletes experiencing foot problems for years. I have been a very pleased patient just as long. I am happy to travel a few extra miles – because Dr. Weiss’s office is like a home away from home.
remember when on July 21, 2010 I was taken to Stamford Hospital, because my only remaining leg had an infection. That is the time I met Dr. Scott Weiss. He came to me and introduced himself but when he held my hand I was confident that he was going to help me get better. Dr. Weiss performed several surgeries to save my left foot over a one year period. He then performed a very large reconstructive fusion surgery to provide me a functional foot to walk on for the rest of my life. A special shoe was provided to me following his instructions. I want to thank you Dr. Weiss for all your help and guidance.
fter nearly 10 years of dealing with toe nail fungus I came to Dr. Scott Weiss hoping to finally find an answer. The fungus had spread to the toenails on both of my feet making the nails thick, yellow and crumbly. Dr. Weiss explained what options we could try including topicals, Lamisil and Laser treatments. Dr. Weiss was very competent and understanding of my concerns. He took the time to answer all of my questions, making me feel valued as a patient and confident in his skills as a doctor. I decided to do the laser treatments. After 3 sessions of laser treatments, with use of a topical between each session, my nails were looking so much better. As my case had been quite bad Dr. Weiss encouraged me to take oral anti-fungal Lamisil to completely eliminate the fungus. While I originally had concerns about the drug, Dr. Weiss explained to me the possible side effects and how he would routinely check my liver enzymes studies to make sure I wasn’t having any ill effects. After 12 weeks on the Lamisil my nails had grown out more clear and normal. One more laser treatment was done and now my nails look amazing. I am so excited to wear sandals this summer! Thanks again to Dr. Scott Weiss and the staff at the Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien.
